Wow thank you so much! I hope you don't mind I sort of took the whole neighbourhoods idea and ran with it here. I think it was when I saw your post about Meadowmere and Warnerville (one of the first posts that I saw) and I was like "WOAH this is still in NYC?" that that kind of made me think about all the other areas in Winnipeg that I hadn't been yet. I was really inspired to do this because it also combines my love of photography with history and geography! I don't think each area has as much readily available information as neighbourhoods in NYC have, but I'll include what I find and either way I'm just grateful that the task of documenting each spot will give me reason to explore.

Stumbled upon this project randomly. Amazing work. I am super excited to hear about some areas that I frequently bike through and love.

Love that you’re getting this project started. I am actually fairly fond of Brooklands and Weston. There’s a shabbiness, sure, but also a richness of older urbanism that, in the right conditions (like much of Winnipeg honestly) could become a nice, walkable neighbourhood. The various shops on Keewatin like the Westbrook Inn are some of my favourites in the area for the various typefaces and signs. There’s actually a clone of the Westbrook Inn cowboy in Beausejour for another establishment off the highway there to Pinawa. Also interesting that Brooklands has a similar history to some of Edmonton’s early bedroom communities that existed right outside the city limits, were working class, and fell on hard times only to be annexed by the larger city in the ‘60s-‘70s.

Thanks Tyler! Yep I noticed that there are some potentially "good bones" as you say of a nice walkable neighbourhood. Just another thing to add to the similarities of Edmonton and Winnipeg!

Really nice project, great start! Something I would like to do with all the small hamlets and villages nearby where I live. Most of them are I think smaller than a neighborhood like Brooklands, but it'll take a life time to go through them all 😂

Thanks Ronald! Oh cool would love to see photos of small hamlets and villages. Truthfully this is one of the more interesting neighbourhoods and a lot of the other neighbourhoods are newer super suburban, so not sure how interesting those future instalments will be. Yeah the map of Winnipeg neighbourhoods I found a little while ago breaks down most of them into doable spots. I think also a big thing is that I'm doing more of a photo bike ride as opposed to a photo walk through these neighbourhoods. Obviously some limitations but I think being on a bike is the perfect in between giving enough context for my surroundings and being able to stop on a dime and also being able to cover more ground.

When I have something completed I'm sure I'll post about here on Substack so you'll be notified 😉

Normally I would do this on foot as well, but I guess to cover more ground a bike would be more suitable. Some of the 'bigger' towns over here would require this I think. But I'm used to biking (I mean, I'm Dutch 😂) so wouldn't be much a problem.

Looking forward to your next installment 👍
